Week 8 Writings – Letter from Abigail Adams to John Adams

Quotes:

In her letter, Abigail Adams requests from her husband who is at war with the British for longer letters to somewhat match the effort she puts into her letters to him. She informs him about the news on her side and asks about his. She then ends the letter by requesting to endow females/wives more rights, reminding him that men are instinctively tyrannical.

“I have sometimes been ready to think that the passion for Liberty cannot be Eaquelly Strong in the Breasts of those who have been accustomed to deprive their fellow Creatures of theirs” (Adam Adams). What has she witnessed??

“Not having an opportunity of sending this I shall add a few lines more; tho not with a heart so gay” (John Adams). That was the first sentence in response to his wife’s letter.

Question:

Why is John Adams apathetically insincere in response to his wife’s request for longer letters? Is it what he has witnessed at war?

Interesting Points:

  • Requests from her husband for female rights.
  • Claims male sex is naturally tyrannical.
  • Acquires for sympathy and longer letters in response to hers.
